Are We Already Boiled Frogs?
The New Yorker Magazine has just published, in the May 09, 2005 edition, the final segment of the the well researched and detailed, three part essay
"The Climate of Man" by
Elizabeth Kolbert.
This excellent essay is very hard reading as it forces us to look deeply at a very uncomfortable issue from which there is no escape, faith-based or otherwise. It can not be "pretended away".
It is beyond doubt that our cultural emphasis on turbo-capitalism has created an environmental perfect storm. We live in a society that measures progress by the single metric of short term capital gain and, as a result, we have ignored the all-too-real consequences of our actions: global warming, toxic polution and environmental devastation. Will we blindly insist on clinging to our obsolete and
rigid ideology or can we redefine "success" in order to create a more sustainable future?
Is it too late to vigorously adopt
Buckminster Fuller's Comprehensive Anticipatory Design Science? Or are we already just so many
boiled frogs?
For a contemporary view of alternative environmental strategies, see the work of
Amory Lovins at the
Rocky Mountain institute.
The failure of American political leaders to confront this issue directly, and to give it the top priority it requires, is simply stunning. Boiled frogs have no need for democracy, social security, tax cuts, or nuclear options to appoint "the right" judges.

Well, let's see now... I just saw on the news the other day, that a new military vehicle has been developed and sent to Iraq. It's equipped with sensors to analize soil and air samples of the terrain it goes over. It's purpose is to locate evidence of weapons of mass destruction (remember how we haven't found them or evidence of them yet?).
Now we hear that Bush is making demands/charges against Korea and Iran regarding their nuclear capabilities. Now please think back to WW2 and the pre-war years when Hitler came to power in Nazi Germany. Is anyone jumping out of the pond yet?

It is interesting how the playing field defines the game. I person interested in the evolution of society on this planet, with a predisposition in the direction of an evolution to a “higher order society” based on the concept of free democracy, perceives global warning as a disaster. Where as I see a chance for the advancement of the human race. What will happen in the next 50 years? It seem likely that we will succeed in modifying the ecosystem to the point where it will become impossible to sustain the web of lies that now passes for society.
When I was a small boy growing up on the farm I was fascinated by how docile cows acted. Wild cattle are fierce and cunning. Cows on the other hand, happily do our biding. After a while I came to realize that when cows acted badly we killed them and used them for food. Only the friendly docile cows got to procreate. Why didn’t this happen to people? Well to some extent it did. The people who followed the rules got to live and succeed better in society. So for the last 1500 years there has been a dumming down influence in society. Fortunately for us there were many frontiers where not following the rules and being very clever created success. Our genes survived there on the edge. We were sparred the fate of the cows. But now there are no more frontiers we face the dumb cow - boiled frog fate because we have become too complacent to leave the pot.
What a wonderful lucky turn of events. A short-term problem is coming that will select the smart, clever and resourceful members of the population, while reducing the overall numbers to a manageable size. There is hope! If there is a group that would like to keep the values and knowledge of this day then I would encourage them to study Freeman Dyson and the Orion project. It would appear that there is no reason that in 50 years we could not implement this exit strategy. I personally don’t think a democratic crew could find it’s way to the stars, but you never know. Fineman tells us how to select and store the knowledge of civilization, Dyson knows how to power the ship, and Fuller knew how to build it, so maybe it’s time to go. Or maybe it is time to stay! This is just the great mother shaking off some flees. More than likely the race will survive and maybe this time we will succeed in caring the knowledge through the fire and ice. So much better than having us descend into an ooze of faith based sludge, blinking at the bright light in the sky!

Just one thing about your message...we don't have any political "leaders", only politicians-proles who do the bidding of PAC's and big business.
When daddy talked about a "New World Order" he was setting up Lillte Lord Georgieroy to implement it. Take a look at his so-called energy policy-great stuff for the big boys. Take a look at the phoney war-all the innocents killed, all the resources wasted, all the anti-Americans created, all the "if you're against me you're for the terrorists" bullshit, all the lies and empty promises to our beloved troops, all the graft at Haliburton and elsewhere, and on it goes.
If it looks like B.S., smells like B.S. and feels like B.S. do you have to eat it to know that it's B.S.?
Tell me how an absolute twit could have a $750 million warchest before he even announced for the presidency. Tell me these donations came from grassroots contributors. Tell me that no one who donated expected anything in return. Tell me that it was just coincidence that the first thing he did was cut taxes because it really was in the best interests of the Americna people to create enormoue deficits. Tell me that there's a light at the end of the tunnel. Tell me that we're winning the war. Tell me God is on our side. Tell me we need to consolidate our military resources so that it will be easier for someone to attack them. Tell me that the base closings have nothing to do with punishing states that voted against our new dictator. Tell me there's someone with his finger in the dike of hatred towards the U.S. Tell me my grandkids have a wonderful life ahead of them.
This bastard and all of his cronies need to be exchanged for any and all hostages any Iraqi insurgents might capture.
We really do have the best government money can buy, and the price keeos going up every day-not just in money but also in terms of the dire consequences of our governmental officials’ actions-again, they're NOT leaders.
Forrest Gump, in a coma, would have enough sense to know that ALL of those bastards in Washington need to be thrown out and replaced by real people with integrity but it won't happen.
Our time in the sun is over with. We're toast. It has happened throughout history and it's happening now. Check with the Greeks, Romans, Turks, Byzantines, British, Mayans, Czars, and so on-"Nah...It CAN"T happen to us!!! We're (fill in the blank).
Fuck George. Fuck Dickie. Puke on Condy.
By the way, we need more unqualified women in positions of power like Madeline Albright-now THERE was a really clever appointment. April Glaspie? So what if she screwed up and it led to the Desert Storm War! No biggie. And Condy? She's the best of the bunch. She's black, she's a bitch, she lies with the best of them and she isn't really qualified either. If it weren’t for political correctness she’d be lucky to get a job as a greeter at Wal-Mart. (Hmmm. I have it! Let’s win the war, pave over the desert, build a REALLY Super Wal-Mart for the politically connected and SHE can work there!!! Eureka!!!)
