Stop Gawking!

I posted an irritable rant at my blog Weblogsky about the wonks driving the new, diminished Wonkette blog; after the fact I realized I was less irritated with the lack of wit (I was never a Wonkette regular) than by the careless cynicism of the of the posts I referred to and others at the site. But Jon, that’s what Gawker Media’s all about - it’s supposed to be entertaining! Yeah, I get it - cynical=cool and funny-cynical=entertaining. Cynical can also be other things, though (callous, crass, cruel - hey, they’re all “c” words), and in the political realm, it’s just what we need to avoid at this point, especially when it’s directed at potential new leaders who might actually do something to elevate the national mood and create a vision that sees - and moves us - beyond greed, avarice, and corruption. Gawker and Wonkette and all the other Gawker Media sites may be clever and funny, but I suggest you avoid them like the plague of cynicism they represent… focus your eyeballs on sites that are constructive, a better “c” word for the contemporary context.
