Introduction to Biochar: Six Posters from IBI

1. What Is Biochar
2. Biochar Can Be Carbon-Negative
3. Environmental Benefits of Biochar
4. Leading Climate Scientists Talk About the Biochar Solution
5. Biochar Production
6. International Biochar Initiative [IBI]
These PDFs print very well in either color or B&W and make excellent 8.5 x 11 hand-out “posters”.

A Path Towards Carbon Negative Heating

As we develop near zero net energy houses with no furnaces, can we start replacing strongly carbon positive fossil fuel powered thermal energy systems with carbon negative alternatives?
Here is one possible path.
We can convert biomass, such as:

Wood chips from beetle killed trees in Colorado.
and turn them into this:

Biochar
In a system such as:

Biochar 1000 prototype [...]

A Path Towards Low Carbon Agriculture

In order to support and strengthen the recent American and Chinese commitments to the concept of Low Carbon Economies, perhaps these policy guide lines and goals could be incorporated into the Waxman Markey American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 [H.R. 2454].
1. Sequester additional carbon in the soils and forests in a sustainable [...]

Biochar Notes: Links and pointers

[请点击7页生物碳简介 (中文版) 谢谢]
Here’s the question: If the maximum “safe” level of CO2 in the atmosphere is 350 parts per million, but today’s level is ALREADY 387 ppm, is it “good enough” to simply reduce the rate at which we are adding CO2 to the atmosphere? Simply put, is any policy option limited to a [...]

The U.S. National Sustainable Infrastructure

Author: Michael D. McDonald, Dr.P.H.
Will the remnants of 20th Century national security mechanisms derail our own recovery and jeopardize the health, well-being and prosperity of Americans by consuming our societal attention and resources around the potential or actual next large terrorist attack, while other greater threats to our society and to the world continue to [...]

Protecting civil liberties against 21st Century threats

For the first time in his professional career, Constitutional Scholar Laurence Tribe – previously on various short-lists of potential Supreme Court nominees – proposed a Constitutional Amendment.
He felt it was necessary in order to assure that traditional 18th Century constitutional civil liberties would remain protected against modern technological threats.
On March 26, 1991, Professor Tribe (now [...]

Time to Hire a National CTO?

Posted by: Jock Gill
To do what? To help us get where?
A very long time ago, on the internet scale, 1992 to be exact, I serendipitously became the first ever presidential campaign staffer assigned to the internet — which meant, in those days, email. This led to my becoming the first White House staffer [...]

‘Hot, Flat, And Crowded’

A great interview on NPR with Thom Friedman. Highly recommended.
Fresh Air from WHYY, September 8, 2008
Thomas Friedman is a man bent on revolution. In his new book, Hot, Flat, and Crowded, the three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist writes about the need for a green revolution — and calls upon Americans to [...]

A Billion Dollars for Electranet Innovation. Why not?

Author: Jock Gill
As Thom Friedman correctly points out, innovation powers “Change”. So if our candidates for president are serious about change, let’s ask them if they are willing to support an innovation agenda. How? And When?
A good place to start, if we are serious about change and about the energy efficiency [...]
